Yoga has changed me… in a good way :)

Hi I’m Gillian!  I’m a yoga teacher, business owner, retired dentist and mum of two teenage girls (the last one is definitely my hardest job!).

I’ve practiced yoga for over 20 years. I first started when I was struggling with being a new dentist in a high-pressure career. At the time I did it because people told me yoga was relaxing. The classes I went to were in the local gym and, to be honest,I treated it like any other exercise class. It took my mind off my worries by giving me something else to think about for an hour.

Since then, throughout my life, I’ve learned how to use yoga both on and off the mat to help me deal with anxiety and stressful times.

Some days I love a very physical practice that works up a sweat, others I just love to get on my mat to move my body in a way that feels good. I also enjoy breathwork to keep me calm and meditation to bring some stillness to my mind.

I trained with Joanne Lockhart, a very well-respected yoga trainer and yoga therapist in Milngavie. This was a huge commitment of time and a massive challenge, both physically and mentally. The course was a year-long deep study of yoga practices and it changed my whole view of yoga.

I spent most of the course telling my fellow yogis that I’d probably never teach! That I was just there to learn more. But the more teaching experience I had, the more I loved it and the more I wanted to share what I’d learnt.

What yoga can do for you

Yoga is so much more than another exercise class. Yoga teaches us how to find balance in our busy modern lives.

I have a very science-based background, so I like to understand the synergy between long-practised yogic traditions and western science.

What I love to share in my classes is how yoga can help in your daily life.

I love that yoga helps you:

  • take control of your own nervous system to relax yourself and help relieve anxiety

  • connect with your body, work through long held patterns of tension and find release

  • develop flexibility and build strength, in your mind as well as your body

Yoga makes me a stronger, calmer, happier and kinder person (my kids and my husband will testify!) – I’d love to help you find out what yoga can do for you.
